At first glance, the roles of TV commercial directors and film directors might seem similar, but they come with very different challenges and skill sets. Here’s my breakdown of why transitioning from commercials to film can be tricky.
TV commercial directors are masters of brevity. Their job is to craft short, eye-catching ads that grab attention and communicate a brand’s message in seconds. Because of this, commercials prioritize the product or service, often at the expense of deep character or story development. Bold visuals, catchy slogans, and creative concepts are essential to make a lasting impression, and with limited timeframes and deadlines, commercial directors excel at quick, efficient storytelling.
Film directors, on the other hand, have the luxury of time to tell complex, character-driven stories that resonate emotionally. Films center on characters and their journeys, focusing on authentic emotions and growth. Great films rely on conflict to move the story forward; without it, the narrative falls flat without it. Film directors also enjoy more freedom to explore themes and artistic expression, creating layered and memorable stories.
While some commercial directors successfully make the leap to film, it’s not an easy switch. Commercials rarely dive into character arcs or emotional depth, which are key to films. Long-form storytelling demands a knack for pacing, character development, and narrative structure—areas that might be underdeveloped in commercial work. The biggest hurdle? Ego and pride. Thinking you’ve mastered storytelling can blind you to what you need to learn.
I learned this the hard way.
As an established commercial director, I was confident when I sat down to write my first 130-page screenplay. But when I read it back, I realized the characters and the story were flat. It was a humbling moment. I had to swallow my pride, dive back into learning, and embrace the art of storytelling. After years of study, practice, and even taking classes, I can now call myself a storyteller - a writer-director.
-Wrapping It Up-
Transitioning from commercials to film is challenging but not impossible. With dedication, an open mind, and a willingness to adapt, commercial directors can embrace the art of long-form storytelling and make their mark in the world of cinema.
